A study on Gen Z online shopping behaviour presented by MRes Student at ICBMECONF

Roumila Gooroochurn, a Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidate from Higher Education Leadership Institute’s (HELI) first batch of Master of Research (MRes) students, presented their research project at a virtual session during the 11th International Conference on Business, Management and Economics (ICBMECONF) held from 14 to 16 August 2025 in Paris, France.

With the sharp upsurge and strong momentum in online shopping, an aftermath of COVID-19, and with businesses in the race to adapt their strategies and get a share of this market, how come studies in e-commerce in Australia, particularly focussing on Generation Z (Gen Z), remain sparse?

Roumila’s research titled ‘Investigating the Online Shopping Behaviour of Generation Z in Australia Using Exploratory Factor Analysis’ addresses this research gap. Drawing on behavioural and technological acceptance theories, Roumila’s study endeavoured to identify the underlying factors influencing the online shopping behaviour of Gen Z in Australia.

Roumila collected data by utilising convenience sampling through a self-administered online survey. To reveal the underlying constructs, the data was analysed using Exploratory Factor Analysis. The results revealed six (6) dominant factors, namely inflation, perceived value and convenience, artificial intelligence, perceived risk, corporate social responsibility and sustainability. Among these, inflation was determined as the most influential factor affecting the online buying behaviour of Gen Z, while sustainability was determined as the least influential factor.

The outcome of Roumila’s study holds theoretical and practical significance and provides new understanding about the expectations, concerns and aspirations of Gen Z in Australia, a cohort increasingly engaged in online transactions.

HELI congratulates Roumila for a successful presentation at the ICBMECONF! The Institute also acknowledges Associate Professor Ahmad Saedisomeolia and Dr Rakesh Khanal, Roumila’s Research Supervisors, for the expert guidance and support they provided.
